Your favorite Awkward Black Girl’s Health and Fitness Journey
This month, Issa Rae, creator, producer, writer, and actress of HBO’s
Insecure was the feature of Women’s Health Magazine, and she shared her health and fitness journey. In the interview, she had with the magazine she first told us how her journey began and what inspired it. She noted that her journey mainly began after gaining what she calls “New Money Weight.” After the success of her web series, Awkward Black Girl, and being introduced to new projects, she began to eat out more and gaining weight. After seeing herself on television, Issa decided it was time to make the time for her health. Issa has also been more dedicated to making and cooking her own meals in the kitchen. Issa had been a vegetarian for 15 years; however, she has recently been learning the Paleo Diet and was
reintroduced to bacon.
Issa also gave us a sneak peek into her workout routine in the interview. She’s an early riser, and sets her alarm at 4:55 in the morning to get her workout started. She does not go to the gym but instead hits the streets of her neighborhood. Since her neighborhood is filled with hills, she alternated between jogging and walking to get a good workout in. Issa also shared an interesting story about her workout. She told Women’s Health Magazine, that once while exercising, she lost her earbud and did not have music the rest of the time. However, she learned from this experience that the silence made the workout more reflective and helped with her mental well-being. She now exercises without her earbuds to take that time for herself and she has noticed she is very creative during that time.
On the same note as mental well-being, Issa Rae noted how black women do not take care of themselves enough and that we should begin to take on self-care. She sees her workout as that time for herself causing her to have overall better mental health. So, what we can learn from Issa Rae’s journey is that we need to make the time for our health, take control of your own diet and workout, start early, and use that workout time for self-care and being with yourself.
